Postcard from the South

At the intersection of traditional and modern, where foreigners most easily understand what the meaning of the word merak, where the best hosts welcomely greet you, where the cheerful southern spirit dominates - there is the city of Nis which history reaches far into the past.

One of the main tourist assets is Mediana - a luxurious suburb of the ancient city of Naissus dating from the end of the 3rd and the beginning of the 4th century, marking the reign of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. Today, Mediana is one of the most important archaeological parks in Serbia. An area of 40 hectares holds the remains of a luxurious villa with a peristyle, the remains of two early Christian churches, parts of a granary, military barracks and water towers.

Another symbol of the city is the fortress, an unmissable place for all guests of Niš. The Ottoman fort from the 18th century was built on the remains of walls from the ancient period. A favorite promenade of the citizens and a place where numerous cultural, artistic and musical events are held.

The road from the fortress often leads guests straight to Tinkers Alley - the last preserved street of the former Niš bazaar. The old craft shops have been converted into restaurants and cafes but preserved the spirit of past architecture.

Tinkers Alley entices with the appearance and smells of gastronomic specialties for which Niš is famous. Burek is the most popular breakfast in Niš and the best medicine after a long night in a local type of tavern called kafana. Whoever taste it once, always returns to it, just as tourists gladly return to Niš.

Many reasons to experience Nis this autumn!
